With New York City arguably being the most bustling metropolitan area, it's no wonder The State of New York is serious about their laws. Ranked third in the United States in population, the state officials need to ensure the safety of all of their residents. Their laws run the gamut, and some are just too silly to comprehend. Here are just some of the strange laws levied in The State of New York.

Some people like to air-dry their clothes by hanging them on a clothesline. In the state, you must purchase a license for this.

If you're in Brooklyn, you'll have to find alternate sleeping quarters for your donkey, as it is illegal to have it sleep in the bathtub.

In most states, jaywalking is illegal. Not in The State of New York. You may cross the street outside of a crosswalk; however, you are breaking the law if you cross the street diagonally.

All homeowners are concerned about curb appeal and keeping their lawn nice and green. In Staten Island, however, you can only water your lawn if you are holding the hose in your hand.


The summer months are hot in New York and who doesn't love ice cream in the summertime? Just remember to not walk around with an ice cream cone in your pocket on Sundays. You may just get a citation instead of a cherry on top.

On the streets of New York City, you will come across thousands of people each day. It wouldn't be far-fetched for you to find someone attractive amidst the throngs of people. But watch your flirting or you could receive a fine of $25.

And perhaps one of the silliest laws that really makes you wonder--slippers may not be worn past 10 p.m.

New York State is one of the most high-profile states in the nation, and residents say there's something for everyone in New York. It seems there is also a law for everything as well.
