Divorce – What About The Utilities?
Most couples have some things in both names and some things in one name, although the service is used by both spouses. Usually whoever's name goes on a particular utility is a convenience thing. The spouse who started the service or who pays the bill is usually the name on the account.
Make a list, and start right away separating all of the accounts that were once in both names. Do this as soon as you can to prevent possible complication later on in the divorce proceedings. Also, having the basic things like utilities in your name is an important step in asserting your independence and rebuilding your life by yourself.
Electric, water, garbage, phone, house and car insurance are the main companies that you need to contact. Make sure as you go down your list all past balances are paid off. If you're staying in the marital home this step is important. The last thing you need is to be stuck with bills from when your ex lived in the house. If you can't work out a payment plan with the other person then discuss it with your attorney.
After switching the utilities in to your name make sure you're paying the bills on time, especially if your spouse was the main bill payer during the marriage. I find a small calendar invaluable in keeping my bill paying in order. As each bill arrives, or if I'm expecting one I mark it on the calendar and keep it near my computer.

If a complete payment isn't required try to pay off as much as you can on each balance. This will help keep your credit rating stable which in turn will help get your life back on the right track where you belong.
