Naturalization at times referred to as naturalisation is the process of getting the citizenship and nationality by a person who was is not a citizen or national of the country in which he or she was born.

Broadly, the key requirements for naturalization are that the person who applies for the same should possess a legal status as a full-time resident for a minimum period of time and that the applicant make a promise to comply with and espouse the laws of that country. In some cases he has to take an oath or pledge of allegiance to corroborate his stance. Some countries also need that a naturalized national must give up any other citizenship that he or she currently holds, that means dual citizenship is not allowed. So a person has to give up his original citizenship and then acquire new citizenship as per the laws of the countries involved.

The Certificate of U.S. Naturalization (form N-550 or N-570) is a document which is issued by the government of United States America serves as a proof that a particular person is citizen of United States of America through the process of naturalization. The Certificate of U.S. Naturalization is by United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Earlier this certificate was issued by Federal Courts and particular State Courts. The United States Certificate of Naturalization is thus a substantiation of an individual's U.S. citizenship through naturalization. Only naturalized United States citizens can file an application for a Certificate of U.S. Naturalization. If a person is not citizen of United States of America, he must first apply for US citizenship.

Both documents give the right to the holder to avail all the benefits of United States citizenship, including filing an application for United States Passport and the right to vote. However, the application requirements for both these documents are not same.
