Yearly, more than a hundred thousand people travel to work in Australia. And not surprisingly, there are a lot more falling in line to get their own chance to work in the country. But because of the large amount of applicants coming in yearly, the process can be quite complicated.
And that is not yet the end of it. The changes that were made by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship to the skilled migration program have also made getting a Australian work visa a little bit harder. This has left many applicants very confused. And so, as a helpful guide, here is a review of the requirements that are needed to be able to get your work visa.
One of the most important of these, especially for those getting long term work, is the job order. For those who don't know this yet, a job order is basically a document issued by the labor department on behalf of the requesting employer or region, declaring that there is indeed a demand for the particular position being applied for.
Previously, the application process has been a bit relaxed with requiring the job order. Most applicants during that time can go through with the process while waiting for the job order to be issued. On the other hand, some positions, especially the lower level ones, actually don't require a job order to grant visas.
However, with the new changes in place, getting a work order has now become a top priority for work visa applicants. In fact, the immigration department now strictly require that the applicants secure a work order first as a prerequisite for getting their visas. And here's a bit of a bad news for those applying for low level positions. Since many of these positions were removed in the Skills Occupation List to make way for more higher level positions (as part of the reorientation of the program), they have also been effectively removed from the priority list for visa issuance. This means that, even if you get your job order even before visa application, you won't still be included in the list of priorities.
And there is still more on the changes in the skilled migration program. The points system that has been used to assess an applicant's qualification has also been heavily revised. More points are now being given to the areas such as skill level and experience than in the terms of sponsorship or job availability. English communication skills have also been heavily emphasized in the new assessment system.
Nevertheless, aside from these major changes, much of the work visa application process is still the same. Thus, if you are already familiar with the procedure, you can easily go through it and get your visa.
